A Love Letter to the Windy City (in Stitches)
At Quilters Quest, we’re proud to call Chicagoland our home. From towering skyscrapers to deep-dish pizza, there’s no shortage of inspiration around here. And what better way to celebrate the city we love than through the art of quilting? Whether you’re a lifelong local or just a fan of that iconic skyline, Chicago is bursting with colors, patterns, and landmarks just begging to be stitched into something beautiful. So today, we’re sharing quilt project ideas inspired by all things Chicago, perfect for decorating, gifting, or showing off your Midwestern pride.
Skyline Silhouettes: Quilt Like an Architect
Few city skylines are as recognizable as Chicago’s, and translating that silhouette into a quilt block or wall hanging is a fun way to blend architecture and artistry. Consider using appliqué or foundation paper piecing to recreate iconic buildings like the Willis Tower, John Hancock, and Marina City. Black, gray, and navy solids make a moody nightscape, or go bold with a rainbow-hued city sunrise. Add a pop of metallic thread for sparkle, and you’ve got yourself a quilt that’s part postcard, part modern masterpiece.

Lake Michigan Blues: Inspired by the Waterfront
The calming blues of Lake Michigan are just asking to be captured in fabric. Try an ombré design that fades from dark navy into pale aqua, or play with curved piecing to mimic gentle waves. Batiks and watery prints add texture and interest, while beachy neutrals like sand and driftwood browns can bring balance. This kind of quilt is perfect for summer throws, seaside-themed rooms, or simply for daydreaming about lakeside walks.

Neighborhood Charm: Patchwork from the North Side to the South Side
Every Chicagoan has a favorite neighborhood, whether it’s the artsy vibe of Wicker Park, the historic beauty of Hyde Park, or the foodie heaven of Pilsen. Celebrate the spirit of each area by turning your quilt into a tribute to the city’s many corners. Try making a block for each neighborhood using colors or motifs that reflect its identity (maybe some floral tones for Andersonville or bold geometric prints for West Loop). For a fun twist, include stitched street names or coordinates to make it personal.

Transit Quilts: The CTA but Make It Quilty
Let’s be honest, anyone who has ever ridden the CTA has a few stories. Why not turn those train line colors into a quilt? Think improv strip quilts or row quilts where each CTA line is represented by a colorful fabric. Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Purple… you know the drill. Use solids or tone-on-tone prints for a graphic look, or add in some novelty city-themed fabrics for extra flair. It’s quirky, it’s urban, and it’s uniquely Chicago.

Chicago Sports-Inspired Projects: For Superfans Only
Whether you're a lifelong Cubs devotee or your heart bleeds Blackhawks red and black, there’s a quilt for that. Use team colors to create sporty throws, picnic quilts for tailgating, or baby quilts for future superfans. Look for licensed team fabric, or go subtle with color schemes and appliqué logos. And don’t forget about house divided quilts for those Cubs vs. Sox households… no judgement, we promise.

Foodie Quilts: Because We Take Pizza (and Popcorn) Seriously
What would a Chicago-inspired quilt collection be without a nod to our famous eats? If you’re a fan of novelty fabrics, now is your moment. Find prints that feature hot dogs (no ketchup, please), pizza slices, or popcorn, and go to town on a cheeky table runner or snack-themed wall hanging. These quilts make great gifts for food lovers or just a fun conversation starter for your next quilt retreat.

Winter in the Windy City: Cozy Projects for Snowy Days
There’s something magical about a snowy Chicago winter, even if we have to shovel it. Channel those icy vibes with a winter-themed quilt full of snowflakes, frosty blues, and cozy textures like flannel or wool. Use star blocks to mimic snowfall, or try your hand at a wintry landscape. These quilts are great for holiday decorating or curling up with while watching the snow fall outside your window (preferably with a hot drink and a fresh bobbin).
