Whether you’re a quilter curious about adding texture to your blocks, a sewist ready to personalize your projects, or a crafter who simply loves the meditative rhythm of needle and thread, embroidery offers a creative pathway that’s both timeless and wonderfully modern.

At Quilters Quest, we believe embroidery belongs to everyone. From the quiet beauty of hand stitching to the dazzling precision of machine embroidery, each method brings its own magic. And the best part is that you don’t need years of experience or a studio full of tools to begin. National Embroidery Month is the perfect moment to explore, experiment, and discover which style of embroidery speaks to you.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the basics of both hand embroidery and machine embroidery, share beginner?friendly project ideas, and highlight the tools and techniques that will help you build confidence.

What Is Embroidery? A Tale of Two Traditions

Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with thread. That’s the simple definition—but the possibilities are endless.

Hand Embroidery

Hand embroidery is the oldest form of stitched decoration, practiced across cultures for thousands of years. It’s slow, meditative, and deeply tactile. With just a needle, thread, and fabric, you can create textures, motifs, borders, and expressive designs.

Popular hand embroidery styles include:

Sashiko – a Japanese running?stitch technique used for mending, quilting, and decorative patterning

Cross?stitch – counted stitching on even?weave fabrics

Surface embroidery – freeform stitching like satin stitch, stem stitch, French knots, and more

Redwork/Bluework – single?color outline embroidery

Crewel work – wool embroidery with bold, textured stitches

Machine Embroidery

Machine embroidery uses a computerized sewing or embroidery machine to stitch designs automatically. Instead of stitching by hand, the machine follows a digital file to create precise motifs, lettering, appliqué, quilting designs, and decorative textures.

Modern embroidery machines, like the BERNINA and Janome models we carry at Quilters Quest, offer:

Built?in designs

USB or Wi?Fi design import

Large embroidery fields

Automatic thread cutting

On?screen editing

High?speed precision stitching

Machine embroidery is ideal for makers who want crisp, consistent results, enjoy technology, or love the idea of embellishing quilts, garments, and home décor with professional?looking designs.

Embroidery Appeals to Quilters and Crafters

Embroidery—hand or machine—adds personality, texture, and storytelling to your projects. It allows you to:

Personalize gifts and garments

Add dimension to quilt blocks

Create decorative home accents

Explore new techniques without needing advanced sewing skills

Enjoy a relaxing, creative process

Connect with a global community of makers

Many quilters discover that embroidery becomes a natural extension of their craft, offering new ways to express themselves through color, texture, and design.

Getting Started with Hand Embroidery

Hand embroidery is wonderfully approachable, and you can begin with just a few simple tools. Most stitchers start with an embroidery hoop to keep their fabric taut, a couple of needles, and a handful of threads—cotton floss, perle cotton, or sashiko thread all work beautifully. Any smooth, medium?weight fabric will do (think linen, quilting cotton, muslin, or even a prepared quilt block), plus a small pair of scissors and a washable marking pen to sketch your design.

From there, learning a few foundational stitches opens up a world of possibilities. Running stitch, backstitch, satin stitch, stem stitch, French knots, and chain stitch form the backbone of most hand embroidery styles. With just these basics, you can create borders, flowers, lettering, geometric motifs, and charming little accents on nearly anything.

For your first projects, keep things simple and satisfying. Many beginners enjoy stitching a quilt label, adding a sashiko?inspired motif to a coaster or patch, creating a small piece of hoop art, or embellishing a pocket or tote bag. Hand embroidery is perfect for makers who love the tactile, meditative rhythm of stitching and want to add personal, expressive touches to their quilts and garments.

Getting Started with Machine Embroidery

Machine embroidery takes a slightly different setup, but the learning curve is friendlier than many beginners expect. You’ll need an embroidery?capable machine, a stabilizer suited to your fabric, embroidery thread and bobbin thread, and a hoop that fits your project. Your machine will come with built?in designs, and you can always add more as you grow.

Once you’re set up, start with projects that let you practice the essentials—hooping, stabilizing, thread changes, and basic editing on your machine’s screen. Monogrammed towels, simple in?the?hoop pouches, embroidered quilt blocks, and personalized napkins or tea towels are all great confidence?builders. Even a small appliqué design stitched by machine can feel like magic the first time you watch it come together.

A few habits will set you up for success: test your design on scrap fabric, choose stabilizer thoughtfully, slow down for dense stitching, change your needle regularly, and give your machine a quick clean now and then. Machine embroidery is ideal for makers who love precision, enjoy technology, or want to create polished, professional?looking embellishments with ease.

Embroidery Enhances Your Quilting Practice

Quilters, in particular, often discover that embroidery brings a new level of depth and detail to their work. Hand stitching can add charming accents to appliqué, create sashiko?inspired quilting lines, or embellish borders with delicate motifs. Machine embroidery, on the other hand, offers crisp precision for quilting in the hoop, creating decorative borders, or adding beautifully stitched labels that turn your quilts into documented heirlooms.

Whether you’re adding a few hand?stitched flourishes or letting your embroidery machine handle intricate designs, embroidery gives you another way to express your creativity through fabric and thread.

Learning with Quilters Quest: Classes, Clubs, and Community

If you’re feeling inspired but aren’t sure where to begin, Quilters Quest is here to guide you. If your sewing room has been whispering (or shouting) for attention, a focused reset can turn chaos into calm and make your creative time feel like a treat again. This guide walks you through a friendly, doable plan to reclaim your space, tame your stash, and build simple systems that actually last.

Start with the right mindset

Organizing isn’t a punishment; it’s an act of kindness toward your future self. Think of this reset as setting the stage for better sewing days: fewer interruptions, faster starts, and more time spent stitching and less time hunting. Two practical approaches will help you choose how to begin:

Man?to?man: Blitz one category at a time — all scraps, all WIPs, all notions. This builds momentum and gives you visible wins.

Zone defense: Tackle one physical area at a time — a table, a shelf, a drawer. This keeps the mess contained and is kinder to limited schedules.

Both work. Pick the one that feels less intimidating and commit to a realistic block of time.

A one?day reset plan you can finish

Goal: Make a visible, usable change in 4–6 hours.

Prep and set a timer
Gather boxes or bins labeled Keep, Donate/Sell, Toss, and Maybe. Put on a playlist, set a 45–60 minute timer, and promise yourself a break when it rings.

Quick triage
Touch each item once. Decide fast. Use the 30?second rule for small notions: if you can’t decide in half a minute, move it to Maybe and come back later.

Group like with like
Stack fabrics by color or by project; put tools into a portable caddy; corral scraps into clear bins sorted by size. Seeing similar items together makes decisions easier.

Fold for visibility
Fold fat quarters and cuts so prints face out. Store bolts upright or on a shelf where you can see the edges. When fabric is visible, you’ll actually use it.

Finish with a plan
Photograph works?in?progress and jot a one?line next step for each. That tiny note prevents duplicate starts and keeps momentum.

This single day will give you a clean surface, a labeled shelf, and a handful of projects with clear next steps — enough to feel accomplished and motivated.

A seven?day micro plan for busy makers

If a full day isn’t possible, spread the reset across a week with short, focused sessions.

Day 1 Clear one table and sort tools.

Day 2 Triage one shelf of fabric.

Day 3 Sort scraps into bins and label them.

Day 4 Deal with notions and threads; toss dried?out glue and broken tools.

Day 5 Photograph WIPs and write next steps.

Day 6 Create a donation pile and list items to sell.

Day 7 Do a 30?minute tidy and celebrate with a small reward.

Short, consistent bursts beat marathon sessions that leave you exhausted and backsliding.

Storage ideas that actually work

Good storage is less about fancy containers and more about visibility and accessibility. Here are practical, low?fuss ideas that keep your space usable:

Clear bins for scraps so you can see sizes and colors at a glance.

Open shelving for frequently used fabrics; closed bins for long?term stash.

A portable tool caddy that moves with you from cutting table to sewing machine.

Pegboard or wall pockets for rulers, scissors, and rotary cutters — tools stay visible and off the table.

Label everything with a simple label maker or masking tape and a permanent marker.

Keep the momentum with tiny habits

The secret to a lasting reset is small, repeatable habits:

One?in, one?out for nonessential purchases keeps the stash from ballooning.

Weekly 10?minute tidy: a short habit prevents future overwhelm.

Quarterly audits: every three months, reassess WIPs and donate what you won’t finish.

These tiny rituals protect your space without turning organizing into a second job.

Your reset doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to be better than yesterday, and it can start anytime! Whether you’re gifting a baby quilt, documenting a family heirloom, or selling finished work, adding a deliberate, well-made label elevates the quilt!

Why label your quilts?

A label turns a quilt into a lasting story: it records who made the quilt, who received it, and when and why it was created so future owners understand its provenance and meaning. Labels also protect the quilt itself by providing simple care instructions for washing, drying, and storage. They create an emotional connection through a short sentiment, quote, or symbol that makes a gift more memorable while offering makers a place to add a professional signature, business name, or social handle.

Labeled quilts are easier to document for insurance, exhibitions, or appraisal, and they pass on practical details—patterns, batting, fabric sources, and techniques—that help future quilters preserve, restore, or continue quilting traditions.

Types of quilt labels and when to use them

Large embroidered labels are bold, decorative statements best for quilts that will be displayed or given for milestone occasions like weddings and anniversaries, while small sewn?in tags offer a minimalist, tucked?away option perfect for everyday quilts or when you want the quilt surface undisturbed.

Embroidered labels can be stitched by hand or with your Embroidery Machine! Printed fabric labels are fast and practical for clear care instructions and batch projects, and corner labels—cut as a triangle or wedge—work especially well on baby quilts or smaller pieces to avoid interrupting the design. Corner pocket labels add flexibility by housing removable cards with longer provenance, photos, or notes, and patch or appliqué labels can be stitched directly into the quilt as integrated motifs, dates, or initials for a seamless, design-forward finish.

What to include on your label

Maker’s name and optionally a business name or social handle.

Recipient’s name and relationship (e.g., “For Emma, with love”).

Date—at minimum the year; include month or special event (e.g., “Christmas 2025”).

Location if relevant (town, state, or “Made in North Adams MA” as a local touch).

Occasion or reason (birthday, wedding, memorial, fundraiser).

Fiber and care notes (e.g., “100% cotton; machine wash gentle cold; line dry”).

Quilt details (pattern name, finished size, batting type, thread).

Message or quote—a short sentiment, a favorite line, or the quilt’s intended purpose.

Contact or copyright for makers who sell: website, Instagram or shop name.

Keep the label text concise; the label should be legible and balanced with the quilt’s aesthetics.

You can find a variety of label products at Quilters Quest, from small tags to more decorative embroidered options, by searching “labels” or “embroidery label” in our online shop or stopping by to see the selection in-person.

A label tells the quilt’s future where it came from, how to care for it, and why it matters. This seemingly simple measurement is the backbone of accurate piecing, crisp points, and blocks that finish at the right size. Yet even experienced quilters know that achieving a consistent ¼ inch seam can be surprisingly tricky.

In this post, we’ll explore why this seam matters so much, how different machines and feet can support your accuracy, and what to do when things go off track. Plus, we’ll share practical tips and tools to help you troubleshoot and improve your results—no matter your skill level.

Why the ¼ Inch Seam Matters

Quilt patterns are designed with a ¼ inch seam allowance in mind. Deviating from this—even slightly—can throw off your entire project. A seam that’s too wide shrinks your blocks; too narrow, and your quilt may not hold together well over time. Multiply that error across dozens of seams, and suddenly your quilt top doesn’t fit your backing or borders.

Precision isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about structural integrity. A consistent ¼ inch seam ensures that your blocks align, your points stay sharp, and your quilt holds up through years of use and washing.

Tools That Help You Nail It

Achieving a perfect ¼ inch seam starts with the right setup. Here are some tools and accessories that can make a big difference:

1. Quarter Inch Presser Feet

Most sewing machine brands offer a dedicated ¼ inch foot. These feet typically have a narrow profile and a guide along the right edge to help you maintain consistent seam width. Some popular options include:

Bernina #37, #57, and #97 feet: Each offers slightly different features, from basic ¼ inch alignment to adjustable guides and wider bases for better stability.

Janome’s O foot: Designed for precise piecing, often included with quilting models.

Generic low-shank feet: Available for machines without brand-specific options.

If you’re unsure which foot fits your machine, Quilters Quest staff can help you find the right match.

2. Stitch Plates

A straight stitch plate with a single needle hole can reduce fabric shifting and improve stitch quality. Some plates even have etched seam guides to help you align your fabric visually.

3. Seam Guides and Tape

If your machine doesn’t have a ¼ inch foot—or if you want extra support—try adding a seam guide. Magnetic guides, adhesive seam guides, or even painter’s tape can mark the exact path for your fabric edge. Just be sure your needle won’t hit anything solid.

4. Measuring Tools

A seam gauge or ruler with a ¼ inch marking can help you test your setup. Sew a sample seam, press it open, and measure the resulting unit. If it’s off, adjust your needle position or guide placement until it’s spot on.

Machine Settings and Adjustments

Different machines behave differently, even with the same foot. Here’s how to fine-tune your setup:

Needle Position: Some machines allow you to shift the needle left or right. If your ¼ inch foot isn’t quite accurate, adjusting the needle can help.

Feed Dogs and Fabric Handling: If your fabric is shifting or bunching, check your feed dogs and presser foot pressure. A walking foot may help with tricky fabrics.

Thread Weight and Tension: Heavier threads or tight tension can subtly affect seam width. Test with the thread you plan to use for your project.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with the right tools, things can go wrong. Here’s how to troubleshoot the most common problems:

Problem: Seams Too Wide or Too Narrow

Solution: Sew a test strip of two 2½ inch squares. After pressing, the finished unit should measure exactly 4½ inches. If it’s off, adjust your needle position or guide.

Problem: Inconsistent Seam Width

Solution: Check your posture and hand placement. Are you guiding the fabric evenly? Is your fabric slipping? A seam guide or extension table can help stabilize your work.

Problem: Points Don’t Match or Get Cut Off

Solution: Double-check your seam allowance and pressing technique. Over-pressing or stretching fabric can distort your blocks. Pinning at intersections can help maintain alignment.

Problem: Fabric Gets Pulled into the Needle Plate

Solution: Switch to a straight stitch plate and use a sharp needle. Starting with a leader scrap can also prevent fabric from being pulled under.

Practice Makes Precision

Like any skill, mastering the ¼ inch seam takes practice. Try piecing a few simple blocks—like four-patches or nine-patches—and measure your results. Keep a notebook of your settings, tools, and adjustments for future reference.

If you’re working on a new machine or switching feet, take time to test before diving into your project. A few minutes of setup can save hours of frustration later.

Classes and Support at Quilters Quest

At Quilters Quest, we know that precision piecing is both an art and a science. But with so many different types, quilting cottons, linen blends, canvas, voile, and more, it can feel overwhelming to know which one is right for your project. The truth is, understanding a few key things about weave, weight, and purpose will help you confidently select the perfect fabric every time. Let’s break it down.

The Basics: What Are Weave and Weight?

Weave refers to how the threads are interlaced to create fabric. Common types include plain weave (like quilting cotton), twill (like denim), and satin weave (with its smooth surface). The weave determines texture, drape, and durability.

Weight refers to how heavy a fabric is, usually measured in grams per square meter (GSM) or ounces per square yard. A light voile feels airy and sheer, while a sturdy canvas holds its shape.

Think of weave as the blueprint and weight as the density, the two together determine how fabric will behave.

Quilting Cottons: The All-Around Favorite

Weave/Weight: Plain weave, medium weight (around 4 oz per square yard)

Best for: Quilts, craft projects, garments like skirts or tops

Prepping tips: Wash and dry before cutting to prevent shrinkage

Shop Cotton

Quilting cotton is the bread-and-butter of most sewing rooms. Its smooth surface and crisp hand make it easy to cut, sew, and press. It holds up beautifully in quilts, but don’t stop there, it also works for tote bags, aprons, and even clothing. Look for higher thread count cottons (sometimes called “quilting cotton premium”) if you want a softer drape.

Linen Blends: Natural Texture with Versatility

Weave/Weight: Varies, but often a looser plain weave mixed with cotton

Best for: Home décor, summer garments, lightweight bags

Prepping tips: Wash gently, linen wrinkles easily! Use a hot iron with steam.

Shop Linen

Linen blends give you the breezy look of linen but with more stability and softness, thanks to cotton mixed in. They’re perfect for garments like dresses, tunics, or lightweight jackets, and they also shine in modern quilts that play with texture. Keep in mind they fray more than cotton, so finish your seams carefully.

Canvas: Strong and Structured

Weave/Weight: Heavy plain weave, 7–12 oz per square yard

Best for: Bags, jackets, upholstery, structured quilts

Prepping tips: Wash separately at first, it can shed a lot of lint. Press with steam to tame wrinkles.

Shop Canvas

If you need durability, canvas is your friend. Its sturdy weave makes it ideal for tote bags, backpacks, and home projects like cushions or slipcovers. Some modern quilters even use canvas for quilt backs when they want extra weight. Just remember, sewing through multiple layers of canvas requires a strong needle (like a jeans needle) and possibly a walking foot.

Voile: Lightweight and Luxurious

Weave/Weight: Lightweight plain weave, semi-sheer

Best for: Scarves, blouses, quilt backings

Prepping tips: Wash gently in cold water, use a fine needle (70/10 or smaller).

Voile is silky, breathable, and drapes beautifully. Many quilters love using voile as quilt backing because it gives quilts an ultra-soft, lightweight finish. It’s also fantastic for garments that need a soft drape. Because it’s delicate, handle carefully when cutting and sewing.

Specialty Fabrics: When to Break the Rules

While quilting cotton, linen blends, canvas, and voile are the most common, don’t overlook other fabrics like flannel, batik, denim, or rayon. Each has unique properties that can elevate your project:

Flannel adds coziness to quilts and pajamas.

Batik cottons are tightly woven, making them great for appliqué.

Denim offers durability for jackets or bags.

Rayon drapes fluidly, perfect for dresses.

Shop Flannel

Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Project

When deciding, ask yourself three questions:

What is the purpose of the project? (Is it a quilt that will be washed often? A bag that needs structure?)

What kind of drape do I want? (Stiff and crisp, or soft and flowing?)

What tools will I need? (Heavy-duty needles for canvas, fine needles for voile, walking foot for slippery fabrics?)

By matching the fabric’s weave and weight to your project’s needs, you’ll end up with results that not only look beautiful but also last.

Final Thoughts

Fabrics aren’t as intimidating once you understand their personalities. Cotton is your reliable friend, linen blends bring texture, canvas offers strength, and voile lends elegance. And when you’re ready to branch out, specialty fabrics let you play even more.

Whether you’re piecing your next quilt top, stitching a breezy dress, or crafting a sturdy tote bag, choosing the right fabric makes all the difference. From towering skyscrapers to deep-dish pizza, there’s no shortage of inspiration around here. And what better way to celebrate the city we love than through the art of quilting? Whether you’re a lifelong local or just a fan of that iconic skyline, Chicago is bursting with colors, patterns, and landmarks just begging to be stitched into something beautiful. So today, we’re sharing quilt project ideas inspired by all things Chicago, perfect for decorating, gifting, or showing off your Midwestern pride.

Skyline Silhouettes: Quilt Like an Architect

Few city skylines are as recognizable as Chicago’s, and translating that silhouette into a quilt block or wall hanging is a fun way to blend architecture and artistry. Consider using appliqué or foundation paper piecing to recreate iconic buildings like the Willis Tower, John Hancock, and Marina City. Black, gray, and navy solids make a moody nightscape, or go bold with a rainbow-hued city sunrise. Add a pop of metallic thread for sparkle, and you’ve got yourself a quilt that’s part postcard, part modern masterpiece.

By Janine Marie https://quiltsfromthelittlehouse.blogspot.com/2019/12/baby-ms-chicago-skyline.html

Lake Michigan Blues: Inspired by the Waterfront

The calming blues of Lake Michigan are just asking to be captured in fabric. Try an ombré design that fades from dark navy into pale aqua, or play with curved piecing to mimic gentle waves. Batiks and watery prints add texture and interest, while beachy neutrals like sand and driftwood browns can bring balance. This kind of quilt is perfect for summer throws, seaside-themed rooms, or simply for daydreaming about lakeside walks.

By Janine Marie https://quiltsfromthelittlehouse.blogspot.com/2018/10/lake-michigan-finish.html

Neighborhood Charm: Patchwork from the North Side to the South Side

Every Chicagoan has a favorite neighborhood, whether it’s the artsy vibe of Wicker Park, the historic beauty of Hyde Park, or the foodie heaven of Pilsen. Celebrate the spirit of each area by turning your quilt into a tribute to the city’s many corners. Try making a block for each neighborhood using colors or motifs that reflect its identity (maybe some floral tones for Andersonville or bold geometric prints for West Loop). For a fun twist, include stitched street names or coordinates to make it personal.

Photo credit to Michael Tercha https://www.chicagotribune.com/2015/12/07/maps-of-the-city-as-varied-as-its-neighborhoods/

Transit Quilts: The CTA but Make It Quilty

Let’s be honest, anyone who has ever ridden the CTA has a few stories. Why not turn those train line colors into a quilt? You want reliability, support, and let's be honest, a little sparkle. Here at Quilters Quest, we know the search can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re looking at two giants in the sewing world: Janome and Bernina. They’re both rockstars, but like any great duo, they bring different things to the sewing table. Whether you're a brand-new sewist, a seasoned quilter, or somewhere in between, we’re here to help you figure out which machine fits your style.

Ease of Use: Janome’s Friendly First Impression

Let’s start with Janome, the brand we often recommend to folks who are new to sewing or returning after a break. Janome machines are intuitive and user-friendly, meaning you don’t need a PhD in Sewing Mechanics to get started. Their menus are simple to navigate, the bobbin-winding and threading systems are a breeze, and the touchscreen interfaces on higher-end models are straightforward and responsive.

Janome is perfect if you want to plug in and sew without spending hours studying the manual. That’s not to say these machines are basic, they’re just engineered for simplicity. And who doesn’t love that?

Precision & Innovation: Bernina’s Engineering Marvel

Now, let’s talk about Bernina, the Swiss-engineered dream machine for perfectionists. Bernina is known for its precise stitching, smooth operation, and rock-solid build quality. These machines are like the sports cars of the sewing world: high-performance, luxurious, and built to last.

One of Bernina’s showstoppers is the Stitch Regulator (BSR), which helps maintain consistent stitch lengths during free-motion quilting. The dual feed system provides exceptional fabric control, making it easier to handle tricky materials and layers. Everything about a Bernina screams precision. If you live for perfect points, smooth curves, and meticulous detail, Bernina might just be your spirit machine.

Free-Motion Quilting Capabilities

Both Janome and Bernina bring their A-game when it comes to free-motion quilting, but they do it in their own way.

Janome machines often come equipped with extra-wide throat space (hello, queen-sized quilt sandwiches!) and excellent free-motion feet included right out of the box. They’re known for having great stitch quality and plenty of features tailored for quilters, including variable speed control and needle-down positioning.

On the other hand, Bernina’s Stitch Regulator is a game changer for many quilters. It takes some of the pressure off maintaining consistent stitch length, which is especially helpful if your quilting confidence wobbles a bit once the feed dogs go down. It’s an investment, but for many, it’s totally worth it.

Accessories, Attachments, and Extras

Janome machines are generous. Many come with a variety of presser feet and attachments included, which means you can start playing with specialty stitches and techniques without dropping extra dollars.

Bernina, while less generous with accessories included up front, has a wide array of premium feet that are beautifully made and super specific. Want to do pintucks on a Tuesday and invisible zippers on a Wednesday? There’s a foot for that. And while you’ll likely buy some of them separately, they’re absolutely top-notch.

Lighting, table extensions, automatic thread cutters, and knee lifts are features available on both brands, it just depends which model you choose. And don’t worry: we can help you match features to your wish list when you visit the shop.

Budget Considerations

Let’s talk numbers. Janome offers a wide range of machines at various price points, which makes it easier to find something fabulous that doesn’t wreck your fabric fund. Whether you’re looking for a starter machine under $1,000 or a top-tier quilting beast, Janome has a well-built option.

Bernina tends to lean more high-end. It’s a big investment, but one that pays off in long-term durability, excellent performance, and some truly luxurious features. If you’re a frequent sewist who wants the best of the best, Bernina is a machine that will go the distance with you, and then some.

Durability and Support

Both brands are known for reliability and longevity. Janome machines are solid workhorses, and with proper maintenance, they’ll stay in great shape for years. Bernina machines have a reputation for being almost indestructible, we've seen decades-old models still running beautifully.

And here’s the best part: when you buy your machine at Quilters Quest, you get more than a machine. You get expert advice, in-store support, machine servicing, and the kind of customer care you just won’t get online. Whether it’s help learning a new technique or troubleshooting an issue, we’re here for you.

So...Which Machine Is Right for You?

If you want something easy to use, thoughtfully designed, and packed with value, Janome might be your perfect match. If you crave top-tier features, precision engineering, and don’t mind investing a bit more, Bernina might be calling your name.

And if you’re still not sure? It’s the star of every show, the eye-catcher, the swoon-worthy bolt you "accidentally" took home from the shop. But what about the humble notions? Those behind-the-scenes MVPs that make quilting possible in the first place?

Without the right notions, even the prettiest fabric can turn into a hot mess. Whether you’re slicing up half-square triangles or unpicking that one rogue seam for the third time, your tools matter. And today, we’re giving them their moment in the spotlight. Here’s a rundown of the essential notions every quilter should have in their sewing arsenal, plus a few extras that might just change your life.

Cutting Tools: Sharp is Smart

First up, the rotary cutter. If you’re new to quilting and haven’t met this gadget yet, get ready to be amazed. It’s like a pizza cutter, but for fabric (and far more accurate). Paired with a self-healing cutting mat, you can slice and dice your way through fabric like a pro.

Shop Rotary Cutters

Now let’s talk rulers. Acrylic rulers come in all shapes and sizes, and once you start collecting them, you may not be able to stop. There are long ones, square ones, ones with weird angles, and every single one has its purpose. If you want sharp blocks and perfect points, rulers are non-negotiable.

Shop Rulers

Pins, Clips & All Things That Hold Stuff Together

There’s nothing glamorous about pins and clips, but oh, how we need them. Straight pins keep your seams aligned and your sanity intact. And then there are Wonder Clips, which sound like something from a superhero movie but are actually just really great for holding thick layers together. They’re especially helpful when binding or when your pin cushion mysteriously disappears for the tenth time this week.

Shop Wonder Clips

And let’s not forget the seam ripper. We all pretend we don’t need it, but we absolutely do. It’s like the best friend who helps you fix your mistakes, even when you don’t want to admit you made them.

Shop Seam Rippers

Marking Tools: Draw the Line

Want to know where to stitch, quilt, or stop sewing? Marking tools are your guide. Fabric-safe pens, pencils, and chalk markers help you draw on your fabric without making a permanent mess. Choose from air-erasable, water-soluble, or just plain easy-to-see options. Whether you're marking a grid for quilting or tracing a complicated appliqué shape, these tools are essential (and often overlooked).

Shop Frixon Pen

Pressing Matters: Because Flat Seams are Happy Seams

We get it, ironing doesn’t exactly scream "fun." But hear us out: a good press can take your quilt from wobbly to wow. Invest in a quality iron that heats up quickly and doesn’t randomly spit water on your fabric (we’ve all had that one iron that does). Add a wool pressing mat to the mix and you’re on your way to perfectly flat seams that behave beautifully.

Shop Irons

Want an extra boost? Try spray starch or flatter spray. They’ll help tame stretch, control bias edges, and make your blocks look sharp enough to frame.

Measuring, Checking, and Other Quilt Math Support

Math may not be every quilter’s favorite part, but it’s part of the deal. So let’s make it easier. A tape measure is a must-have for borders, backing, and larger projects. A seam gauge or quarter-inch guide can help you keep that all-important scant seam allowance in check.

Some quilters even keep a little cheat sheet nearby with common block sizes and cutting formulas. Because quilt math is real, and it’s okay to phone a friend…or a notion…for help.

Shop Measuring Tapes

Thread, Needles, and the Bits That Do the Stitching

Good fabric deserves good thread. Add in a quilter obsessed with 1930s feed sack prints and another who only works in bright, splashy florals, and you’ve got a pretty typical day in a quilt workroom.

That’s the beauty of quilting: no two people do it the same, and that’s what makes it endlessly inspiring. Whether you love things neat and tidy or prefer to color outside the seams, there’s a place for you in the sewing circle. Today we’re diving into what makes traditional and modern quilting styles so different—and so much fun.

What is Traditional Quilting?
Traditional quilting has its roots in history—literally. Think blocks that have been passed down through generations, fabrics that echo bygone eras, and a whole lot of beautiful symmetry. Traditional quilts often feature small-scale prints, reproduction fabrics, and meticulously pieced blocks like Log Cabin, Double Wedding Ring, and—you guessed it—Flying Geese.

These quilts are typically made from patterns and follow a certain structure. There's a comforting rhythm to the repetition, and for many quilters, it's as soothing as a cup of tea and a needle in hand. But don’t let all the tradition fool you into thinking these quilts are boring. Quite the opposite! There’s serious beauty and complexity in these time-honored designs. It takes serious skill to make those points match up and those colors harmonize just right.

Orienteer Pattern

Traditional quilting also connects us to the quilters who came before us. Every block has a story, every fabric a memory. It’s about honoring the past while stitching something new. And sometimes, it’s just about the joy of perfectly matching points and finding the exact right shade of tan.

What is Modern Quilting?
If traditional quilting is a symphony, modern quilting is jazz—improvisational, unexpected, and full of surprises. Modern quilters play with bold colors, wide swaths of negative space, and layouts that might make your grandmother do a double-take. It’s quilting with a wink, a twist, and a whole lot of creative freedom.

Modern quilts often skip the repetition in favor of asymmetry, minimalism, and striking visual impact. Solid fabrics reign supreme, but geometric prints, abstract motifs, and wild color-blocking are all fair game. The Modern Quilt Guild helped formalize the movement, but at its heart, modern quilting is about innovation and self-expression.

Laura Heine Pattern

Don’t feel like following a pattern? Make it up as you go. Want to use one giant block and call it done? Go for it. Modern quilting encourages you to break the rules—or toss them out entirely. You can mix hand quilting with machine stitching, combine traditional blocks in new ways, or turn negative space into a focal point. It’s quilting unbound, and it’s a total blast.

Where They Overlap
Despite their differences, traditional and modern quilting have more in common than you might think. Plenty of quilts exist somewhere in the middle—what some are calling “modern traditionalism.” That’s when traditional blocks are rendered in modern fabrics or set into unexpected layouts. Or maybe a sleek, modern design gets a dose of nostalgia thanks to a sweet 1930s floral.

The lines blur more than you’d expect, and the overlap is where some of the most exciting quilting happens. Techniques like paper piecing, appliqué, and curved piecing aren’t exclusive to one style or the other. In fact, many modern quilters are borrowing tools and tips straight from the traditional playbook—and vice versa.

Sparrows Pattern

This quilting cross-pollination has given us a wonderfully eclectic quilting world where everyone can find their voice and make something that feels uniquely theirs. No gatekeeping here—just a big, colorful tent where everyone’s welcome.

Choosing Your Style
Some days you may want to follow a meticulously written pattern, pick out a dozen matching fabrics, and stitch a perfectly balanced Irish Chain. Other days? You just want to throw a bunch of bold scraps on the design wall and see what sticks. And that’s the joy of quilting—you don’t have to choose one path forever.

Your quilting style can shift based on the project, your mood, or even the recipient. Making a quilt for your vintage-loving aunt? Go traditional. Stitching something to hang in your modern living room? Go abstract. Feel like making a pink and orange log cabin with metallic accents? Go for it.

Mini Coo Pattern

There’s no quilting police. The colors, textures, and patterns we choose breathe life into our creations, transforming them from simple layers of cotton into stories, emotions, and heirlooms. And for that, we have fabric designers to thank. These creative minds don’t just produce pretty patterns; they shape the entire aesthetic of our quilts, setting the mood and giving us endless inspiration.

At Quilters Quest, we’re lucky to stock an array of stunning collections, but today, we’re shining the spotlight on three of our absolute favorites: Sally Kelly, Edyta Sitar, and Seth Apter. FMQ isn’t just a technique; it’s an artistic adventure that lets you “paint” your fabric by adding texture and personality to your quilts. Sure, the idea of driving your fabric freely under a needle might sound a little nerve-wracking, but trust us—with the right tools and a bit of practice, you’ll be stitching loops, swirls, and feathers like a pro. And when you pair your skills with a powerhouse machine like a Janome or a Bernina, the world is your oyster.

Finding Your Groove in Free-Motion Quilting

Free-motion quilting is like painting, but with fabric and thread instead of a paint and canvas. It’s a quilting technique where you control the fabric's movement to create intricate designs. Unlike standard quilting methods that rely on feed dogs to guide the fabric, FMQ more often than not requires you to lower those feed dogs and take the reins.

Before you dive in, make sure your sewing machine is FMQ-ready. Drop those feed dogs, attach a darning or free-motion foot, and set up your quilt sandwich. That’s your backing, batting, and quilt top layered together. If you’re just starting out: practice on small swatches before tackling a full quilt. It’s the quilting equivalent of stretching before a workout—get those muscles warmed up with loops and waves. The best practice is to stitch out your name.

Free-motion Embroidery Foot

Shop Here

Tools That Make the Magic Happen

The right equipment can turn FMQ from a daunting task into a delightful experience. If you’re looking to make FMQ a breeze, you can’t go wrong with a Janome or a Bernina machine. Janome machines are FMQ rockstars, thanks to features like adjustable presser foot pressure and a larger space to the right of the needle. Models like the Janome Memory Craft series are a favorite among FMQ enthusiasts for their smooth operation and precision.

Janome Machines

Shop Here

Then there’s Bernina, the Rolls-Royce of sewing machines. Bernina’s BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator) is a game-changer, ensuring consistent stitch length no matter how fast or slow you move the fabric. It’s like having a quilting guardian angel hovering over your project. Whether you’re a beginner or an FMQ veteran, a Bernina machine will make you feel like you’ve unlocked a secret quilting superpower.

Beyond the machine, you’ll want some FMQ essentials: quilting gloves or grip aids for better fabric control and high-quality needles and thread. Trust us, investing in these tools will save you a lot of frustration (and possibly a few choice words) down the road.

Quilting Gloves

Shop Here

Stitching Up Success

Now that you’re geared up, let’s talk technique. The first rule of FMQ is to plan your design—or don’t. If you’re feeling spontaneous, let your needle wander and see where it takes you. But if you’re aiming for a specific look, sketch your design beforehand or use stencils as a guide. Your quilt’s blocks and borders can also inspire patterns, so take a good look at your project before diving in.

Doodle Quilting book

Shop Here

The key to FMQ success is finding a rhythm. Think of it as coordinating a dance between your hands and your foot pedal. Too fast, and your stitches might look like a caffeine-fueled zigzag; too slow, and you’ll have stitches so long they could double as jump ropes. Practice finding that sweet spot where your fabric moves smoothly, and your stitches stay even.

Start with beginner-friendly designs like stippling, loops, or meandering lines. As you build confidence, graduate to more intricate patterns like feathers, pebbles, or custom motifs. And remember, it’s okay to make mistakes. In fact, embrace them! Every oops is a step toward mastery and you can always seam rip it out if it bothers you that much.

Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters Book

Shop Here

When Things Go Awry

Even the most experienced quilters face hiccups, so don’t sweat it if things go sideways. So grab your favorite beverage and let’s dive into some quilting fun!

Choosing the Right Fabrics

Start with Pre-Cuts or Fat Quarter Bundles
When it comes to fabric, the options can be overwhelming. Starting with pre-cuts like charm packs, jelly rolls, or layer cakes is a great way to ease into quilting without spending hours matching fabrics. These pre-cut bundles not only save time but also ensure the colors and patterns already coordinate beautifully.

                                                                                   Shop Precuts

Stick to Quilting Cotton
Quilting cotton is a beginner’s best friend. It’s sturdy, easy to cut, and behaves itself under an iron. Avoid slippery satins or stretchy knits for now—those are advanced fabrics that can test your patience. Trust us, quilting cotton will make your first projects a breeze.

                                                                           Shop Quilting Cottons

Consider Color and Contrast
Choosing fabrics can feel like an art form, but don’t overthink it. A good rule of thumb is to mix light, medium, and dark tones to create visual contrast. If you’re unsure, start with a kit or ask for advice at your local quilt shop (we’re always happy to help!).

Essential Tools for Beginners

Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, and Rulers
These three tools are the holy trinity of quilting. A rotary cutter slices through fabric like butter, a cutting mat protects your table and helps with measurements, and quilting rulers keep your cuts straight and accurate. Start with a medium-sized mat and a basic 6” x 24” ruler—perfect for most beginner projects.

                                                                               Rotary Cutters

Quality Needles and Thread
Your machine’s needle is small but mighty. Look for universal or quilting needles in sizes 75/11 or 90/14. Pair them with a good-quality thread like Aurifil, Mettler, or Gutermann to prevent breakage and tangles. (Your future self will thank you!)

                                                                                  Shop Threads

Iron and Pressing Tools
Pressing seams is one of quilting’s best-kept secrets for crisp, professional-looking results. Invest in a good iron and a pressing mat. Even a mini iron works wonders for small spaces and detailed seams. Remember: press, don’t iron—you want to flatten seams, not stretch your fabric.

                                                                                       Oliso Iron

Cutting Tips for Success

Read the Pattern Carefully
Before you even pick up your rotary cutter, take time to read your pattern thoroughly. Understanding the cutting instructions will save you from costly (and frustrating) mistakes. Pro tip: Use sticky notes to label your cut pieces so they don’t get mixed up.

Master Straight Cuts
Straight cuts are the foundation of quilting. Align your fabric’s edge with the cutting mat’s grid lines and use your ruler to guide the rotary cutter. Keep a firm grip on the ruler to prevent it from slipping—and watch those fingers!

Practice Consistency
Precise cutting is key to fitting pieces together seamlessly. Take your time and double-check measurements before making each cut. It’s better to go slow and steady than to end up with mismatched pieces.

Piecing Basics

Start Simple
Choose beginner-friendly patterns with basic shapes like squares, rectangles, or strips. Projects like baby quilts or table runners are perfect for honing your skills without feeling overwhelmed. (Plus, they make great gifts!)

                                                                                Shop Patterns

Sew with a Quarter-Inch Seam Allowance
The quarter-inch seam allowance is the gold standard in quilting. Most sewing machines have a quarter-inch foot, but if yours doesn’t, use washi tape or painter’s tape to mark the seam allowance on your machine.

Press Seams as You Go
Pressing seams after each row of stitching keeps everything neat and flat. For beginners, pressing seams to one side is easiest, but some quilters prefer pressing seams open for less bulk. Experiment and see what works best for you.

Practice Patience and Enjoy the Process

Embrace Imperfections
Mistakes are part of the learning process, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Whether it’s a wonky seam or a miscut square, remember that every quilter started as a beginner.

Take Your Time
Quilting isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Break your project into manageable steps and enjoy the journey. Celebrate each small victory, from your first perfectly aligned seam to your first finished quilt top.

Quilting is a rewarding hobby that combines creativity, precision, and a touch of patience. Seam Ripper

Let’s be real—mistakes happen. That’s where the trusty seam ripper comes in. Every quilter needs one (or two… just in case the first one gets lost in a pile of fabric). A seam ripper is your go-to tool for undoing those not-so-perfect stitches. They come in various types: ergonomic ones for comfort, tiny sharp-tip ones for precision, or even ones with a light and magnifying glass attached.

2. Rotary Cutter

Gone are the days of cutting fabric with plain ol' scissors (unless that’s your thing, who are we to judge?). A rotary cutter is a quilter’s best friend for precision cutting. These handy tools come with different blade sizes—45mm is the standard go-to for most projects, but 28mm is great for smaller cuts and curves. And remember, safety first! Always retract the blade when you’re done cutting to avoid those "oops" moments. Oh, and stock up on replacement blades—there’s nothing worse than cutting with a dull or chipped blade!

Perfect Scissors

3. Little Fabric Scissors

Not all scissors are created equal, and when it comes to quilting, you need a small, sharp pair. These little scissors are perfect for snipping threads, trimming seams, and making those detailed cuts. And as every seasoned quilter knows, keep these scissors away from paper and family members who will misuse them—fabric scissors deserve the royal treatment.

4. Thread

It may seem obvious, but not all threads are the same. High-quality thread is key to making sure your quilts last. Cotton thread is a classic for quilting, but polyester is great for durability, and there are specialty threads for adding extra flair. The right thread depends on your fabric and project, but a general rule is to match the thread fiber with your fabric fiber when piecing. And remember, thread color doesn’t always have to match perfectly—sometimes contrasting thread can add a fun, decorative element to your quilt!

Olfa Self Healing Cutting Mat

5. Cutting Mat

Your rotary cutter’s best buddy is the cutting mat. A good mat protects your work surface and helps with accurate cutting. Self-healing mats are especially popular because they show less blade marks. A standard 24” x 36” mat is a good size for most projects, but if you’re short on space, smaller mats work too. Just make sure your mat is flat and smooth—any warping can mess up your cuts.

6. Clear Ruler

Clear rulers are your guiding light for precision. They come in all shapes and sizes, but the 6” x 24” ruler is a favorite among quilters for its versatility. The transparency helps you line up your fabric perfectly, and the gridlines make measuring easy. Pair it with your cutting mat and rotary cutter, and you’re ready to make precision cuts!

7. Iron and Ironing Board

Quilting is all about precision, and pressing your seams as you go is the secret to crisp, clean lines. Whether you prefer a steam or dry iron, the key is to press—gently lifting and lowering the iron onto your seams instead of dragging across your fabric which can cause it to stretch. A good ironing board with ample space is also important. And let’s face it, pressing a finished quilt block feels pretty satisfying!

8. Needles

Needles, both for your machine and hand-sewing, are essential. Machine needles come in different sizes and types (like universal, quilting, and microtex), and using the right one makes a world of difference. Hand-sewing needles are great for binding or detailed stitching. The best brands will depend on your machine, but always make sure your needles are sharp—dull needles can cause skipped stitches or snag your fabric.

Flower Head Pins

9. Pins

Yes, pins are essential, even in today’s world of clips and wonder tapes. Flat-head or glass-head pins are perfect for holding fabric layers in place, and long, sharp ones are best for quilting. When pinning, make sure your fabric doesn’t shift, and avoid sewing over pins to keep your needle (and machine!) safe.

10. Quilting Ruler Grip or Non-Slip Grips

Okay, this one might be more of a bonus, but trust us—it’s a game-changer. A quilting ruler grip (or non-slip grips) keeps your ruler steady while cutting fabric, preventing those annoying shifts that can ruin an otherwise perfect cut. They’re easy to attach and can drastically improve your cutting accuracy.

There you have it—the top 10 tools every quilter should have in their toolkit. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been quilting for years, having the right tools makes everything easier. So, take a look at your current toolkit and see if any of these essentials are missing. Whether you’re looking for a fast gift or want to burn through some of your fabric scraps (hello, overflowing scrap bin), these eight small quilting projects are just what you need. These Mini-makes are perfect for beginners or experienced quilters alike!

Coasters

Who doesn’t love a good coaster? They’re the unsung heroes of the household, protecting our tables from coffee rings and condensation. And let’s face it, a handmade set is way more fun than anything store-bought. Coasters are the perfect project when you want something quick and gratifying or something small and intricate. An easy and fast coaster to make is to cut a few squares of 4” fabric and sandwich them together with batting and quilt as desired.

Looking for some extra flair? Customize your coasters with seasonal fabrics, add some fun embroidery, or make a patchwork version with your favorite scraps. Plus, they make great gifts—especially when paired with a favorite mug or a bag of tea or coffee beans!

Bookmarks

For the bookworms in your life, a quilted bookmark is a thoughtful and unique gift. You can easily whip one up using fabric scraps, and the possibilities for customization are endless. Make them simple with just a rectangle of quilted fabric or get fancy with appliqué, patchwork, or fabric ties at the top.

To ensure your bookmark can stand the test of time (and survive many chapters of page-turning), add some lightweight interfacing inside. This not only gives it some heft but also makes the bookmark sturdy enough to hold its place in even the thickest novels.

Reading Pillow Pattern

Pillow Covers

Pillow covers are the easiest way to refresh your living space without a full room makeover. Whether you prefer a traditional quilted front or a more modern, sleek look, you can easily whip up an envelope or zippered pillow cover in no time. The best part? They’re totally customizable. Match your décor, experiment with bold patterns, or create a seasonal set to rotate throughout the year.

Pillow covers also make perfect gifts—who doesn’t love a handmade touch to their home? And if you’re feeling extra generous, pair it with a coordinating throw for a cozy, gift-worthy combo.

Deco the Halls Table Runner

Table Runners

Table runners are a must-have for anyone who loves to entertain (or simply wants to add a pop of color to their dining room). Not only are they functional—keeping spills at bay and adding some festive flair—but they’re also a great way to showcase your quilting skills without committing to a full quilt.

Design options are endless: go with seasonal themes, intricate piecing, or simple strips sewn together for a minimalist look. Once your top is pieced just quilt, bind, and voilà! You’ve got a stunning table runner that’s sure to impress your dinner guests.

Oven Mitts

We all know someone who loves to cook (or bake), and what better gift for them than a pair of handmade oven mitts? Not only are these super practical, but they’re also a lot of fun to personalize. Choose fabrics that suit the recipient’s kitchen, add some fun quilted patterns, or customize the size to fit their hands perfectly.

Just be sure to use heat-resistant batting like Insul-Bright so those mitts actually protect from the heat! A personalized set of oven mitts paired with a homemade baked treat? That’s a gift combo that can’t be beat.

Mug Rugs

What’s bigger than a coaster but smaller than a placemat? A mug rug, of course! These little gems are perfect for holding your morning coffee and a snack while you sit down for some quilting time. Mug rugs are slightly larger than coasters, giving you more room to play with fun designs—think mini quilt blocks, appliqué, or even embroidered quotes.

Finishing a mug rug is a breeze: bind it like a quilt or go for a no-binding finish with a turned edge. These make perfect gifts for teachers, co-workers, or anyone who loves to sip their tea or coffee in style.

Mini Quilts

Mini quilts are tiny masterpieces that are perfect for piecing practice or home décor. Do you have a new block technique you want to try out but don’t want to commit to a full quilt? Make a mini! These little projects are great for testing your skills or using up fabric from previous projects.

Mini quilts also make beautiful wall art. Frame them, hang them from dowels, or just let them shine on their own. They’re great for adding a touch of quilty goodness to your home or gifting to a fellow quilter who will appreciate your handiwork.

Angler Zipper Pouch

Zipper Pouches

Last but not least, the beloved zipper pouch. Choose a favored fabric for the lining, and you’ve got yourself a professional-looking zipper pouch in no time.

Don’t be intimidated by the zipper, they sound harder to deal with than they actually are—once you get the hang of it, you’ll be making these pouches for everyone you know. Add a pop of fun with bright colors, patterned fabrics, or even a patchwork design. Bonus: they’re great scrap-busters!

Quick, Fun, and Gift-Worthy Projects

There you have it—8 small quilting projects that aren’t quilts but are still packed with creativity and love. Quilt retreats come in all shapes and sizes, from glitzy cruises with national educators to serene getaways in luxury retreat centers. But perhaps the most beloved and common type of retreat is the open retreat. These events allow quilters to come together in their local quilt shop’s classroom for several days of uninterrupted stitching sessions. These retreats are special opportunities to socialize (or sew-cialize!) with fellow quilters, sharing tips, advice, and telling your best stories.

What to Expect at an Open Retreat: Sew, Eat, Repeat!

Imagine this: you walk into your quilt shop’s cozy, well-equipped classroom and claim your very own table for the next 3-4 days to work on whatever project you choose. No need to worry about packing up your gear every night! Just leave everything set up, ready for when you return the next day. These retreats are designed for maximum convenience and creativity, typically running all day and into the evening. Shops typically provide ironing stations, cutting stations, and even design walls to help you bring your project to life.

Each participant gets plenty of table space to spread out and work on their projects. Host shops usually provide meals; make sure you know what your shop will be offering so you don’t end up sewing on an empty stomach! (At Quilters Quest retreats, we provide lunch and dinner, so you can focus on quilting and socializing without worrying about meals. We also have a fridge, coffee maker, and bottled water on hand.) It's a stress-free, fun-filled few days dedicated entirely to your passion.

Open retreats are supported by shop staff, and of course your fellow quilters will have experience and advice to share as well.

The best part of a quilt retreat? The social aspect. Attendees rave about the joy of meeting new people, exchanging tips and tricks, and sometimes even plotting to tackle group projects. It's like a mini quilting festival where everyone speaks your language and shares your enthusiasm for fabric and thread.

<img width="400" height="400" src="https://siterepository.s3.amazonaws.com/4696/400x400_2_20240819130601png.png" alt="A grid of three images inside Quilters Quest: the classroom, shelves, and machines. First, you can enjoy creative rejuvenation by spending dedicated time focusing on your projects without daily distractions (imagine a few days with no "What's for dinner?" questions). It's a great opportunity for skill development, allowing you to learn new techniques from fellow quilters and expand your quilting repertoire. These retreats also foster community building, helping you forge lasting friendships with other quilters as the retreat atmosphere is perfect for bonding over shared passions (and swapping fabric stashes!). Many of our attendees have heartwarming personal stories of projects finished, new skills learned, and friendships made during our retreats. It’s an experience that stays with you long after the retreat ends, much like the threads you keep finding on your clothes!

Keep a Lookout!

Attending an open quilt retreat is more than just a chance to sew—it's an opportunity to feed your creative spirit, learn new skills, and become part of a supportive quilting community. Whether you're a seasoned quilter or a newbie, these retreats offer something for everyone.

At Quilters Quest, we love offering our Sewing Daze open retreats and welcoming old and new friends into the shop for a few days of sewing and socializing. If you’re heading to a family gathering anytime soon, you’re probably bringing one of your favorite casserole dishes to share.

Casseroles are wonderful but they can be tricky to transport. Just out of the oven, they’re too hot to handle, but you don’t want to lose all that heat- many casseroles are best served warm. The solution: a casserole carrier.

Casserole carriers are great for hot dishes, cold dishes, and pies!

Casserole carriers are a fantastic addition to any quilter's project list. These practical, insulated carriers are perfect for transporting hot (or cold) dishes to family gatherings, potlucks, picnics, and more. They’re useful year-round, whether you’re headed to a summer family reunion or a wintertime holiday celebration. In this post, we’re talking about some of the sizes, shapes, and options that you need to consider when you’re planning to make a casserole carrier.

Uses of Casserole Carriers

Casserole carriers are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of settings:

Family Gatherings and Holiday Meals: Keep your mac and cheese, stuffing, or green bean casserole warm while on the road to a relative's house for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

Outdoor Picnics: When eating outside, you’ll want to make sure your dish is served at the ideal temperature.

Hostess Gifts: We love a handmade casserole carrier as a gift. Pick fabrics and trims that match your host’s taste and create a one-of-a-kind thoughtful and functional gift.

Everyday Use: Keep your carrier handy so you can use it to keep one dish warm while you’re waiting for the rest of the meal to be done.

Styles of Casserole Carriers

Casserole carriers come in several styles to suit different needs:

Flat Carriers: These are simple, flat designs that wrap around the casserole dish, often with overlapping flaps secured by Velcro or snaps. We’ve even seen versions with zippers, but you definitely don’t need to install a zipper to make a great carrier. (This flat carrier will come together quickly.)

Rounded Carriers: Rounded carriers can resemble a basket, complete with a stiffened handle (as shown in this tutorial).

Common Sizes

Casserole carriers are typically designed to fit standard casserole dishes:

9” x 13” Dish: The most common size, suitable for most family-sized casseroles.

8” Round Dish: For smaller casseroles, side dishes, and pie plates.

Custom Sizes: Carriers can be made to fit any dish by adjusting the pattern dimensions. Of course the benefit of handmaking a casserole carrier is that you can tailor it exactly to your needs.

Materials and Supplies Needed

To make a casserole carrier, you'll need these basic supplies:

Cotton Fabric: aim for 1/2 yard for the exterior and 1/2 yard for the lining. (Cotton is preferable to synthetic fibers because cotton isn’t at risk of melting under extreme heat.)

Insulated Batting: approximately 1/2 yard, to keep food hot or cold.

Depending on your design, you may also need these supplies:

Cotton Webbing or Fabric for Straps: We recommend straps that loop fully around the bottom of the carrier for extra security.

Velcro or Snaps: For keeping the carrier closed (to maintain the insulating properties).

Optional Features

Enhance your casserole carrier with these optional features:

Pockets: Add a small slip pocket on the top to hold utensils or napkins.

Elastic Loops and Buttons: If you have a stash of fun buttons, opt to secure the carrier with a loop and button closure instead of Velcro or snaps.

Extra Insulation: Consider double layers of batting for additional temperature regulation.

Decorative Elements: Consider adding an embroidered design (either by machine or hand), especially if you’re giving the carrier as a gift. You might also want to play with fun decorative quilting patterns as you finish the carrier.

Benefits of Having a Casserole Carrier

There are several advantages to having a casserole carrier:

Temperature Control: Keeps your dish at the desired temperature longer.

Portability: Makes it easier to transport dishes without spills.

Reusable: An eco-friendly alternative to disposable containers.

Versatility: Can be used for hot or cold dishes, and even as a makeshift basket.

Cons to Watch Out For

While casserole carriers are highly useful, there are a few potential downsides:

Size Limitations: Custom sizes may be required for non-standard dishes.

Material Durability: Frequent use may wear out fabric and insulation.

Complexity: Beginners might find the sewing project a bit challenging due to multiple layers and insulation.

You’re ready for your next gathering!

Whether for personal use or as a thoughtful gift, casserole carriers make transporting dishes a breeze while keeping them at the perfect temperature. Where are you traveling this summer? Do your plans include a road trip? If you’re going to be sitting in a car for hours on end, do you have any crafty plans in mind? It’s tough to bring a large project like a quilt– even if you’re quilting by hand, a quilt can be bulky, warm, and hard to manipulate when you’re in a confined space.

Two Travel-Friendly Projects

We have two road-tested projects to recommend and some suggestions to make great memories as you travel. We’re talking quilty projects– though embroidery, knit, crochet, and other fiber projects can also be great candidates for road trips. Our suggestions are for hand-sewn projects that will keep your hands busy as the countryside passes by your window.

Give one of these a try: English Paper Piecing Hexies or Quilt as You Go Rectangles. A great thing about both projects– you don’t have to have a plan in mind. Allow yourself to focus on one piece at a time. The focus and repetition is good for relaxing your brain while still keeping it active. You can listen to an audiobook or hold a conversation while sewing.

Both projects allow you to work small and are simple and repetitive. They’re adaptable to many different finished projects, and they’re both great scrap busters. Ready to learn more?

EPP Hexies

Have you tried English Paper Piecing? Maybe it’s time to give it a try. EPP Hexagon projects vary widely in their size, but they’re all based on the repetition of a simple hexagon. Make six hexies and sew them together into a flower and you’ve got a perfect decoration for a tote bag. Or make hundreds (over many years, probably) and use them to create a complete bed-sized quilt. Here’s a tutorial to introduce the basics pf EPP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC-zsisnmNc

If you save up enough hexies, you can make a quilt like this example!

QAYG Rectangles

Quilt As You Go refers to the practice of making multiple small quilt sandwiches complete with batting, quilting, and binding, then joining these pieces to form a larger decorative or functional piece. We like this video introduction to QAYG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v5MGHxD5Tw

Once you pick a project, you’ll need to gather your tools and supplies. For either project, you need mostly the same items. For fabric, precut as much as you can before you leave. If you have room, you can toss in a small cutting mat, rotary cutter, and your cutting template in your suitcase so you can cut more fabric while you’re on the road. In addition to fabric you will need:

Needles

Pins (or clips)

Thimble

Thread (plus wax)

Needle threader

Reading glasses

Thread trimmer (or small scissors)

For EPP hexies, you’ll also need

Paper template pieces

Sewing glue pen

For QAYG, add these to your bag:

Batting

Seam roller (and a lap-sized hard surface to press your folds)

Make Fabric Memories!

While you have fabric on the brain and in your hands, consider adding some fabric shopping to your trip. This is a special way to commemorate your trip. Look for these shopping opportunities:

Quilt shops. Look for fabric that reminds you of highlights of your trip. Did you spend a day at the lake with grandkids? Look for colors that match the kids’ floaties.

Antique shops. When you visit antique shops, keep an eye out for vintage linens. Look for lightweight wovens. You might even find embroidered bits of ladies’ hankies, pillowcases, napkins and tablecloths that you can include. Also look at tea towels/dish towels, which often feature decorative motifs.

Thrift shops. If you’re already a thrift shopper, you know that thrifting is hit-and-miss. Selections vary every day, but if you enjoy spending some time browsing the racks, you can often find unique treasures for a great price. Look for cotton wovens in two spots:

Domestics: tablecloths, napkins, curtains, pillowcases, etc.

Men’s button-down shirts- men’s oxfords in cotton and flannel can be fun additions to a project. Again, look for colors and patterns that remind you of your trip.

Next, If you want to work with these new-to-you fabrics during your trip, give them the sniff test to see if they need a wash. You won’t need to launder new fabric from the quilt shop (unless you like to preshrink your fabric), but the vintage and thrifted fabrics might benefit from a wash.

Tips for Sewing on the Road

Take a break every 30 minutes to stretch your hands, wrists, arms, and neck.

Every 10 minutes, give your eyes a break from closeup focus by looking around for a few minutes.

Don’t pack anything you’d be crushed to lose. Those beautiful embroidery snips you love? Leave them at home. Toss in a thread trimmer or a spare pair of cuticle scissors instead.

We hope this inspires you to pick up a new project this summer! " class="img-responsive" />

How many tote bags do you own?

How many tote bags have you made?

Totes are everywhere and that’s for a good reason– they’re very handy to have around for your hobbies and for daily life too. For instance, if you’re making EPP hexies you may have a tote bag dedicated to that project. If you knit or crochet, there’s a good chance each of those WIPs live in a dedicated tote bag too. Then you have a bag for the beach, a bag for the library, a bag for book club, plus many more.

While it’s tough to argue that you NEED yet another tote bag, it’s always a fun project. Once you’ve made a few by following different patterns, you start to form opinions and preferences about construction and functionality, particularly because how you construct the tote influences what you can do with the tote.

Tote Bag Options

In this post, we look at some of the key choices in tote bag construction and function. We’ll walk through pros and cons of different materials and methods. We hope this helps you make decisions about your next tote project. We’ll include some links to example projects along the way.

Fabrics for Tote Bags

Start with a few questions: What do you need the tote for? How will it be used?

Those answers will tell you what size to make and what kinds of fabric to consider. If you’re making a small library book tote for a kiddo, you’ll be fine with a quilting cotton or flannel- remember to make it large enough to handle large picture books! If you want a big tote to carry on your summer adventures and you know you don’t want to worry about being careful with the bag, then look at duck canvas or another sturdy home decor fabric.

In all cases: avoid knits. Knits just don’t provide the structure necessary for a tote.

Do I Need to Line a Tote Bag?

How much time do you have for this project?

If you need to get the project done quickly, opt for an unlined bag. If you’re working with a thick fabric and have a serger, you’ll be able to whip up a tote in no time. The serger is very important here. In an unlined tote, raw fabric edges need to be enclosed to prevent fraying and to keep the bag looking nice. (You can use a zigzag stitch on a domestic to enclose raw edges, but this method doesn’t look as tidy and won’t last as long.)

If you’re making a lightweight tote, definitely add a lining and interfacing to give the bag enough structure to make it easy to use.

Tip: Choose a light-colored lining fabric with minimal print to make it easier to locate things when you’re looking in the bag.

A lining is also your chance to add custom pockets to your tote. What pockets will be most useful for this tote? Consider pocket placement here- a high-up pocket may be easiest to reach (especially on a deeper tote), but a lower pocket is better for heavier items (like your phone).

Box the Bottom

While the very simplest tote bag won’t have a boxed bottom, taking the small amount of time needed to add two seams to the bottom of the bag adds depth, making the bag more versatile and easier to use. If your bag is lined, you’ll need to box that layer as well.

Straps for a Tote Bag

A tote always has two sturdy straps, one on each side. Length can vary, but you’ll want a bag that will be comfortable to use. If you want to hang it on your shoulder, you’ll need a longer drop.

Tip: Grab a tote you already own and like and use that measurement for your straps.

We love to use webbing for tote handles. Look for 1” or 1 ½” webbing in your local shop. You might prefer a wider strap for a larger tote. As you browse the options, pay attention to the fabric content- cotton webbing is usually softer than synthetic options, but synthetics can come in a huge range of colors. You’ll want to avoid any webbing that is too stiff and scratchy- you’ll end up avoiding it and not enjoying it like you should!

Tip: Strap-making can be a chance to use up extra binding you have lying around. You’ll want the binding to complement your tote, of course. Binding will work best for lighter totes that won’t be carrying heavy loads.

If you’re sewing your straps to the outside of your bag, now is the time to attach them. If you have plenty of strap material, go for a looped strap that travels from one side of the bag over the bottom and back to the other side. We love this because it’s sturdy and because it adds a classic tote design detail.

You might also choose to wait on attaching the straps to tuck them in between the bag and lining– keep reading for that method.

How To Line a Tote Bag

How do you want to attach the lining to the outer bag? Once your outer bag and inner lining are complete, you need to decide how to put them together. We recommend either of these two methods.

Inside Out Method:

The first- and most essential- step of this method occurs when you’re sewing the lining. When stitching up one of the sides of the lining, leave a few inches open.

Turn both the outer bag and lining inside out. Nest them together, right sides touching, with the lining on the outside. (Note: if you’re going for extra tote construction bonus points, you can tuck straps in between the layers at this time- this results in a nice finish, but it will place a lot of stress on the seam as you use the tote, so use this for lighter totes only.)

Sew around the top to attach the bag and lining. Using the opening you left on the lining, turn the bag right-side-out. Sew the opening shut. Go back to the top seam to press and then add a round of topstitching to secure the opening.

Binding (Drop In) Method:

Binding is a great option for attaching inner and outer layers of a tote. It’s a chance to add another decorative element to the bag, and the binding will add structure to the opening so it stays open more easily. You’ll nest the bags inside each other (wrong sides touching) and add your binding all the way around.

Getting started on a new tote bag is exciting. In an afternoon, you can have a brand new bag to use yourself or give as a gift. We hope this review of tote bag options helps you make decisions about how you’ll construct your next bag.

If you’re a beginner to tote bags, we’ve gathered a few tutorials that will walk you through the process and help you make a bag you’ll be proud to carry.

DIY Tote Bag from Whitney Sews

Easy Lined Tote Bag from Sewing Report

The Perfect Tote Bag Tutorial from Melanie Ham

Whether you’ve made tons of totes or are just getting started on your first, Quilters Quest can help you find the right fabrics and supplies to suit your needs. Stop in today or visit us online anytime!

Beginner's Guide to Sergers: For Quilters and Garment Sewists http://www.quiltersquest.comhttps://www.quiltersquest.com/modules/news.htm?newsId=12702

If you've been eyeing that mysterious machine in the corner of your local quilt shop, you're not alone. Sergers, sometimes known as overlockers, are versatile tools that can improve the quality and efficiency of your sewing projects. Today, we're going to demystify the serger to help you decide if you should make room for one in your quilting studio.
How do Sergers Work?
Let's start with the basics. A serger is a specialized sewing machine designed to finish seams and edges quickly and neatly. Unlike a traditional sewing machine, a serger uses multiple threads to sew, trim and finish the fabric edge in one step.
The magic happens thanks to the serger's intricate mechanics. Inside the machine, you'll find multiple threads winding through various tension disks and loopers. As you guide your fabric through the machine, the serger trims the seam allowance and encases the raw edge with a series of interlocking stitches. The result? Professional-looking seams that are durable and decorative.
Benefits of Owning a Serger
Now that you understand the basics of a serger, let's talk about why you might want to add one to your sewing room:

Finished Seams: Say goodbye to frayed edges! With a serger, you can finish your seams quickly and neatly, giving your projects a polished look inside and out.

Versatility: Sergers aren't just for garment sewing. Quilters can use them for assembling quilt tops and backs, and as a pre-binding step to even out the edges of a quilt sandwich.

Time-Saving: Sergers are designed for efficiency. They can stitch, trim, and finish seams all in one pass, saving you time and effort compared to traditional sewing methods.

Knit Fabrics: If you work with stretch or knit fabrics, you'll love how the machine compensates for the stretch to give a perfect seam on your garments for that ready-to-wear look.

4 Popular Serger Projects for Beginning Sergers

Are you wondering what else you can make with a serger? Here are five beginner-friendly projects:

Tote Bag
If you’re an experienced quilter or sewist, it’s likely you already have a go-to tote bag pattern. When you use a serger to sew together the seams that build the bag, you’re creating a sturdy seam that won’t fray. Feel free to skip the lining step altogether! You don’t need to protect any raw edges from fraying! Serged totes make excellent reusable gift bags, too.

Zipper Pouch
Just like with Tote Bags, using a serger to make a zipper pouch makes it possible to cut out the lining step. You’ll have a sturdy pouch suitable for pencils, makeup, toys, hair accessories, or whatever clutter you need to contain. Did you know a serger can be used to insert a zipper?!

Infinity Scarf
Transform a piece of knit fabric into a cozy infinity scarf. Serging the edges creates a clean finish that won't unravel, even after multiple wears and washes.

Baby Blanket
Welcome a new arrival with a handmade baby blanket. Use soft flannel or minky fabric for the front and back and finish the edges with a serged rolled hem for a cute and tidy finish.

Ready to Get Serging?

Whether you're a quilter looking to add a professional finish to your projects or a garment sewist eager to explore new techniques, a serger can make your sewing life a little easier. If you’re interested in learning more about how a serger works, visit our shop. Quilters Quest is here to support your quilting journey. Contact us today to learn more!

Exploring Quilting Techniques: Free Motion, Ruler, and Straight Line http://www.quiltersquest.comhttps://www.quiltersquest.com/modules/news.htm?newsId=12672
When you’re staring at your quilt sandwich—quilt top, batting, and backing all basted together in your favorite method—you might still be thinking about how you want to quilt it. Do you opt for a free-motion, ruler-guided, or straight-line design? Each method brings its own charm, challenges, and creative possibilities. If you’re new to quilting, you may still be learning about the different options for securing the quilt layers. Let’s review the basics of these three popular options.

Freedom with Free Motion Quilting

Free Motion Quilting, or FMQ, is a technique that allows you to quilt intricate designs by moving the needle across the fabric in any direction. Longarm quilting machines are designed for large-scale and rapid free motion quilting, but you can also achieve FMQ designs on a domestic machine. The most important tool you’ll need is a hopping foot (also called a darning foot). This foot has a spring which allows it to bounce on the fabric as you sew, and it will have an open circle base allowing you to focus on where the needle will pierce the fabric. By adding this foot and lowering the feed dogs, you’ve completed the essential first steps for FMQ on your machine. A few more tools will make at-home FMQ much easier: a Supreme Slider will allow the fabric to move easily around your sewing area. Quilting gloves (with rubber grips) will allow you to move the fabric without slipping.

To get started, find a few quilting designs you’d like to replicate. Have images handy for reference as you go. You’ll want to start on a practice quilt sandwich to get a feel for the process. Lower your foot at the edge of your sandwich, drop in one stitch so you can bring up your bobbin thread, hold on to both tails and get started! Pick your ending point (add a dot with a Frixion pen) and start doodling with thread!

Chain of hearts FMQ pattern photographed by flickr user ginapina.

Ruler Quilting: Precision and Control

Ruler Quilting, also known as Quilting Ruler Work, combines the precision of quilting rulers with the flexibility of free motion quilting to create accurate, repeatable designs. It's perfect for quilters who appreciate clean lines and intricate detailing in their projects. By combining rulers in different ways, quilters can create a completely custom design.

Ruler Quilting can be done on a domestic or longarm sewing machine. If you’re looking to expand your skill set and give ruler quilting a try at home, we have a few tips to keep in mind. First, the correct supplies are essential. You’ll need a specialized ruler quilting foot. It resembles a FMQ foot, but it has a thicker profile designed to match up with the quilting ruler. Second, you’ll need specialized quilting rulers. You may be tempted to grab a clear cutting ruler that you already have, but resist that urge. Cutting rulers are typically ⅛”, while quilting rulers are ¼”. This depth keeps the ruler from sliding under the foot and causing damage to your machine or your fingers.

Practice on a test sandwich before you move on to a project (a throw pillow could be a great option here). You’ll set up to start stitching (bring up the bobbin thread!) and find a spot to be your destination. Use the ruler to span the gap, keeping in mind the distance between the edge of the foot and the spot where the needle enters the fabric. You’ll quickly find one of the great features of ruler quilting– like FMQ, you don’t need to rotate the project.

Twelve Sisters Triangle Quilt was made with the use of a specialized ruler. One great feature of straight-line quilting is that it can be done on many domestic machines if you opt for a pattern that uses long, straight lines. If you’re a beginner who has just finished a nine-patch quilt, for example, a great option can be to quilt by sewing parallel to your pieced lines. You’ll have to wrestle with your quilt a bit, but you’ll minimize that by sticking with longer lines. Using a walking foot for your machine will also make this process go more smoothly as it will feed the layers through your machine evenly.

If you’re using a longarm, however, straight-line quilting options expand endlessly. Select from styles, including parallel lines, matchstick quilting, grid, cross hatch, and echo lines. Parallel lines and matchstick quilting can give your quilt a modern look, while grid and cross hatch designs offer a classic appeal.

Straight lines are used across the sky on this charming quilt. Just as a well-tuned instrument produces beautiful melodies, a well-maintained sewing machine is the key to making flawless stitches and turning your sewing space into a haven of creativity. In this guide, we'll share essential steps of at-home sewing machine maintenance.

Maintain a Regular Cleaning Routine

Just like any tool, your sewing machine requires regular tidying to keep it in top-notch shape. You can decide to do this weekly or after you finish a project, just make sure you have a regular cadence so that it’s not too long in between each cleaning. When cleaning your machine, remove lint, dust, and stray threads from the bobbin area, feed dogs, and thread path. Use a small brush, such as the Microbrush Bendable Applicator, to gently– do not get too aggressive with the brush as there are small springs that can be dislodged– sweep away any debris.

Change Your Needle Regularly

One of the simplest yet often overlooked aspects of sewing machine care is changing the needle regularly. Over time, needles can become dull or bent (this is hard to see without a microscope, but trust us, your needle does get dull!), leading to uneven stitches and potential damage to your fabric. Aim to change your needle after every 8-10 hours of sewing or with each new project. Our favorite needles for quilt piecing are Schmetz Microtex needles.

Proper Threading Techniques

Correct threading is crucial for optimal sewing machine performance. Consult your machine's manual for the recommended threading process, and always thread your machine with the presser foot up to ensure proper tension. This small but important step can prevent thread jams and ensure smooth stitching. It’s also important to use the correct weight and type of thread for your sewing machine and project. Test out various thread brands to see which one your machine likes best!

Oiling Your Machine

Check your sewing machine's manual for guidance on oiling. Some machines are self-lubricating and may not require oiling, while others benefit from periodic lubrication. Use only the recommended oil specified by your machine manufacturer and follow the instructions carefully to keep the moving parts working smoothly.

Storage Matters

When not in use, cover your sewing machine to protect it from dust and sunlight. Our team is comprised of several talented longarmers, five dedicated machines and tens of thousands available longarm designs. No other shop offers full service longarming like Quilters Quest. We pride ourselves on our unique conveyor system (think similar to a dry cleaner!) where we can organize, store, and manage over 460 quilts packaged in individual garment bags to keep your quilts clean. Our resident quilting expert, Robert Cornella AKA Longarm Bob has worked on and quilted more than 12,000 quilts! We offer beautiful edge to edge quilting services (unfortunately, we do not offer custom quilting any more) and a variety of finishing services to make completing your quilt projects a breeze!

We are sharing some quick and easy tips for getting your quilt ready for our longarm services.

First things first, when you’re ready to bring your quilt in, complete the Longarm Information Sheet. If you don’t have a printer, we have printed copies available in store.

Please note that you will be given a “target” date for expected longarm completion. This is an informational date, not a promised date; however, if you need your quilt by a specific date, we will get it done for you!

Following the Longarm Information Sheet, let’s walk you through all the things you’ll need to consider, prior to bringing your quilt in.

Press the quilt top. Ensure that your quilt top is clean and trim any loose threads. Press your quilt top with an iron to remove wrinkles and creases. A smooth surface is ideal for longarming. Please, make certain there are no open seams.

Measure the quilt top. Measure the width and length of your quilt top. This is important to determine how much backing you will need. Is the quilt top directional? If so, mark the top.

Piece or cut the backing fabric. Your backing needs to be at least 3” larger than the quilt top all around for quilting cotton fabric. If you’re using cuddle, flannel, or minkee for the backing, the piece needs to be at least 4” all the way around. For example, if your quilt is 60” wide x 72” long, your cotton backing would need to be 66” wide x 78” long OR your cuddle/flannel/minkee backing would need to be 68” wide x 80” wide.

The extra fabric allows for clamping the backing to the longarm.

If your backing is pieced, press the backing.

Is the backing directional? If so, mark which side is the top. If you run out of time (or steam!) Quilters Quest also offers backing services. We can construct your backing for you at a nominal charge.

Select your batting. Will you bring your own batting or purchase from Quilters Quest? We have a large selection of Quilters Dream cotton batting available! We also offer Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 batting on a roll and you are only charged for what is actually used. If you have a very specific batting preference, you can include it with your quilt.

When selecting batting, consider loft (how puffy you want your quilt to be), use (will this be a quilt for display or will you be using it as a bed covering)

Select your thread. Do you want the quilting to blend in or pop?

Select a complementary thread color if you want the quilting to blend in. Select a contrasting thread color for a pop! Additionally, would you like a variegated (thread color changes throughout) or a solid (thread color is the same throughout) thread? We have more than 350 threads to choose from!

Determine your quilting design preferences. What kind of design do you want quilted? Geometric, floral, we even have animals! We have more than 30,000 designs available to choose from! You can view some popular edge to edge design selection options here.

How densely would you like the quilt to be quilted? More quilting will make the quilt stiffer, while less quilting will allow for more draping.

Trimming the quilt sandwich Once we complete the quilting, would you like us to trim the quilt sandwich? This means all you would need to do once you have the quilt is add the binding and your quilt is complete!

Binding If binding is not your favorite thing, we also offer a binding service! This means when you pick up your quilt, it will be completely done, binding and all! We offer both machine and hand binding. You can supply the fabric for the binding or ask us to select a complementary fabric.

We hope this helps answer any questions you may have about longarming! As always, feel free to email, call, or visit us in person with any additional questions! Don’t delay! The last day for Holiday 2023 delivery of longarmed quilts is October 15th!
